Pigeon Rouge Apple

There are several clones/varieties of Pigeon, all of which probably goes back to Pigeonnes Jerusalem, coming from Normandy, where there are records of Pigeonnes Jerusalem back in the late 1700s. At the National Fruit Collection in England is a Pigeonnes Jerusalem, a more angular apple and with less red than the Common Pigeon.

Pigeonnet Jérusalem or a seed of this is probably come to this country through the Royal Orchard nursery in Odense, in the list from 1795 are included a Pigeon rouge.

Since Pigeon to some extent are the seed constant, it may be that Pigeon derived from the seed of cores from Pigeonnet Jérusalem.

The tree grows moderately strong with high growth.

The apple is small to medium, shape is oval and slightly asymmetrical. Apples ground color is greenish-yellow. Cover color is dark red and covers approx. 75% of the apple. Apples topcoat is smooth with more or less distinct stripes.

Pigeon has solid, crisp and juicy flesh with a tart sweet and distinctive fine refreshing taste with a bitter hint of tannin. The flesh is white.

Pigeon's are eating apples of high quality, but is also suitable for salads and desserts mm.

Pigeon can be harvested from October and several times, so the apples get as much color as possible. The apples can be stored for Christmas. Pigeon is also called Christmas apple, and has previously been used for decoration of Christmas.

If you want the all-red color, Pigeon Apples's must be picked from the trees and laid on a drained surface. The apples must have sun and turned over several times until they get the right color red.
