Redfree Apple

Redfree are developed in the U.S. in collaboration with institutions in Illinois, Indiana and New Jersey. The goal was to produced varieties that were resistant to the very widespread and very damaging disease, apple scab. From the 1980s, redfree with several varieties was tested at the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences for their suitability under Danish conditions. It was not until 1996 that the apple variety Redfree was recommended for planting in gardens because of its resistant to scab (Vf gene) and a satisfactory eating quality.

The tree is widely growing, medium intensity and high growth with hanging branches.

Medium sized, firm apple. First greenish yellow with red stripes, later shiny, dark red topcoat. The flesh is firm with good taste. Stated by professional taste panels to have a good eating quality with medium apple flavor and medium sweetness.

It is the earliest of the scab resistant varieties and fruits is very much attached to the branches, so shelter is not so necessary. If picked to late are both taste and shelf life poor. Ripens from 1 September and the rest of the month. Is primarily an eating apple.
